Looking for millions of answers?
Ask one of MPA’s three hotlines
All hotlines are open to active, sustaining and student newspaper members of Michigan Press Association.
Legal and Libel Hotline
Call 800.334.5390 for quick answers to legal questions affecting newspapers
The MPA Legal and Libel Hotline enables MPA members to call for help
with libel, Open Meetings, FOIA and other legal matters from MPA
General Counsel Dawn Phillips Hertz. The hotline provides members with
a reliable, quickly available source of expert advice on legal issues
in most areas of law affecting newspapers.
Dawn Phillips Hertz is Of Counsel to Butzel Long, practicing in the
firm’s Ann Arbor office. She is a graduate of the University of
Michigan (B.A. 1968, J.D. 1971). Ms. Hertz specializes in First
Amendment work, and has extensive experience counseling media clients.
For over 20 years, she has served as General Counsel to the Michigan
Press Association, and represents individual member newspapers as well
as other media.
No-cost telephone inquiries are limited to questions that can be
answered without the need for extensive investigation or legal
research. The majority of routine legal questions can be answered
without the need for further legal expense. If your question requires
significant time or research, the attorneys will charge you at their
normal hourly rates.
Labor and Employment Law Hotline
Call 800.334.5390 for quick answers to employment law questions
MPA members may use the Employment Law Hotline for free consultation
with attorneys who specialize in labor and employment law.
MPA has selected the law firm of Butzel Long to
staff the hotline. The purpose of the hotline is to
provide you with free and timely answers to your employment-related
questions. The attorneys are generally able to answer most of your
questions in one phone call. However, if your question requires
significant time or research, the attorneys will charge you at their
normal hourly rates. They will inform you of this up front so that you
may decide whether you want the attorneys to proceed.
Please note that discussing a matter with Butzel Long
will not preclude the firm from representing a person or entity adverse
to your newspaper in an unrelated matter.
