No organization is more vigilant about protecting openness in government than Michigan Press Association
MPA often supports members who are fighting for access to
government-held information either through the court system or with
top-notch legal or procedural advice.
Our Freedom of Information and
Open Meetings experts are always there to answer any questions members
have about their right to access public records.
MPA's efforts also
help diffuse attempts by government to impose higher costs of doing
business on newspapers. We screen all legislative bills, carefully
monitor those that affect newspapering or public information and
initiate legislation at the recommendation of the board of directors.
Frequent reports keep members abreast of state and federal legislative
activity and suggest action to help maintain or improve newspapers'
position. MPA also makes presentations on behalf of members before
legislators.
