Members of the
Michigan Newspapers in Education Committee are making it easier for you to grow
readership and get kids feeling the magic of the First
Amendment.
NIE offers a great way for you to promote youth readership in your
area. It also helps newspapers build relationships with educators.
Students whose teachers use newspapers in their classrooms score better
on tests, demonstrate better reading, writing and comprehension skills,
are more politically aware, and exhibit stronger feelings of civic
responsibility.
Many Michigan newspapers are already members of NIE. Muskegon Chronicle
Editor Gunnar Carlson says: "I don't think NIE has ever been more
important to newspapers. The extra circulation is nice, but what's more
essential to our industry than the next generation of news readers? NIE
programs are training those readers for us right now."
Nolan Finley, Editorial page Editor of the Detroit News says
“Newspapers land on fewer porches today than they once did. For many
children, the classroom is where they are introduced to the newspaper,
and discover the personal pleasure of navigating its pages, and in the
process, the world. The future of our business depends mightily on
cultivating these young readers, and hooking them on the newspaper
reading habit. Newspapers in Education is a vital tool in building that
future customer base.”
Our MINIEC committee discusses practical ideas on engaging students
through the newspaper. Details on how to take part are noted in the
flyer, which is available to download HERE.
