This course is an online primer on reporting basics, covering business,
sports, cops & courts, local government, education and basic news
writing topics.
It is completely FREE for MPA member newspapers and their staffs.
Listed below is a brief description of each section of the Reporting Shortcourse.
The Basic News Writing Module
A primer designed to teach beginning reporters the inverted pyramid
news writing style, AP Writing style, quotation and attribution,
notetaking and interview skills.
The Education Beat Module
A primer designed to instruct beginning reporters about the basics of
the education beat. Covers background, organization and challenges.
The Local Government Beat Module
A primer designed to teach the basics about how to cover the city,
county and township beats for Michigan newspapers.
The Business Beat Module
A primer designed to teach reporters how to write news stories about
publicly traded and privately held corporations and local retail and
businesses.
The Cops & Courts Beat Module
A primer designed to teach reporters how to cover crime, the police department and the court system in their local communities.
The Budget Module
How to read them, how to report them, what to look for, comparing last year to this year.
The Sports Beat Module
Reporters will learn how to cover prep and college sports. Who are the best sources and what
are the best kinds of stories to write for newspaper sports pages?
